How it began
From its foundation in Leuven....
Bazart was founded in 2011 by BAMM upon its move to its current location at OPEK, situated along the Vaart. At the time, the area was undergoing a drastic transformation from an industrial site into a lively and vibrant neighborhood. A growing number of young inhabitants highlighted the need for local initiatives. In response, BAMM committed to establishing a sustainable, community-focused project in collaboration with local children and adults. An artistic youth movement provided the format to achieve these goals.
...To its expansion to nine cities in Flanders
In september 2012, Bazart expanded to Antwerp, launching a new department at youth centre Kavka. One year later, Bazart Turnhout followed suit in youth centre de Wollewei. By 2014, two new departments has been established in Brussels at primary school BS De Kleurdoos and in Bruges at arts centre het Entrepot.
In 2015, we extended our reach to Kortrijk, settling down at Groeningeheem. A year later, Bazart Mechelen joined the movement in de Academie, and in 2017, Ghent followed suit in SMAK. In 2019, Bazart Aalst opened its dors at NW, an open house for contemporary art and film. Our youngest member, Bazart Hasselt, was established in October 2025 and now resides in Stadsmus.
Ever since 2020, we organize open "play weeks" as part of our summer program, The Summer of Bazart. During these weeks, children and young adults will dive into the world of art and creation for five days straight. Anyone can join, also non-members. The Summer of Bazart was initially introduced as a substitute activity during the COVID-19 summer of 2020, but has since then become a beloved and yearly part of our movement.
Bazart has grown significantly over the past few years and continues to expand its reach. Currently, an estimated 600 Bazart members are playing across 10 different cities every Saturday. Isn't that cool? One thing is certain: Bazart will continue playing, creating and experimenting in the future. Who knows? Maybe soon we'll conquer a new city?
